From June we will be using VIVO miles to reward students. More information will follow shortly but in the meantime you are welcome to look at www.vivomiles.com where there is a tab for parents which gives you information about the benefits of VIVOs.

Why is Vivo so beneficial to my child?

• Early personal finance lessons

Vivo is designed in such a way that it looks and feels to students a lot like their first bank account. With the currency being the’ Vivo’ and hard work being the way to earn ‘Vivos’ it presents a unique opportunity to teach some important personal finance lessons. Saving up for something over a longer term, earning interest, budgeting and managing an account are all covered by the Vivo system.

• Encourages giving to charity

Vivo Miles allows students to donate the Vivos they earn in school to charities of their choice, empowering them and educating them at the same time. It is an incredibly rewarding feeling for students to work hard for their Vivos so that they can help others in need. In fact, donating to charities is the most popular way to use Vivos! Hundreds of charities have benefited from the generosity of young people.

• League tables and competitions

Schools can use the Vivo Miles system to encourage healthy competition between students. With more traditional certificates and even trophies up for grabs for the best performers it is a fun and more up to date way to engage and stimulate students to go the extra mile, and it’s got that all important cool factor!

• Healthy habits

Many schools are successfully encouraging a healthier school day by using Vivo as an extra incentive to change behaviour. This can be by choosing a healthier option at lunch or by taking part in physical activities they otherwise might not have tried. As part of the government’s every child matters initiative Vivo links directly into ‘be healthy’ and statistics have shown it can make a real difference to the health of young people who feel more motivated to make the healthy choice.

• Boosting grades!

Vivo has been helping schools to improve student grades all over the country. Now parents can be even more involved! By setting targets with associated rewards in the Vivo parent module you can help to drive improvements in your child’s learning. Making a simple pledge to add that extra level of incentive (e.g. “earn 200 Vivos and we will take you to the cinema”), or matching the school Vivo-for-Vivo to boost your child’s motivation is simple to do and incredibly effective. Coming soon, parents will also be able to link pocket money to school and home life with the help of Vivo’s unique software and an optional Vivo pre-paid card.

For Sport Relief this year, HO.CSK initiated the first ever Great Mascalls Bake-off in which students and teachers could pledge to make a cake or cookies that would be judged and then sold off to raise money for charity. The event was a huge success with many cakes, cookies, whirls and tarts being kindly donated. We raised £140, which will be split between three different charities.

The overall all winner was Liam Roots in Year 10 (F.AMO) with his perfectly baked chocolate sponge cake.

The Sixth Form Health and Social Care started visiting Margaret Fisher House in Paddock Wood in November 2011. The group attend once a fortnight and undertake a range of activities including craft, bingo, painting nails, board games, knitting and generally chatting about a wide range of issues. The residents came to the Health and Social Care Christmas party in December and over the last couple of months the group have been fundraising so they can take the residents out for the afternoon in the July. They have sold craft items ( made with the residents) and other craft items and cards donated by Denis Crookes.

The group really enjoy visiting the residents.

Bethany Lambert said, “It has helped me develop communication skills and  friendships”.

Robyn Cooper said ” I have developed more respect for the elderly and realised that even something as simple as painting nails can mean a lot to someone else.”

Melissa Sage said ” It’s an enjoyable experience and I look forward to it”.
